Function Dichotomy Grids

Function Dichotomy Grids

Jared Vaughan's seven Model A function grids as one working diagram. Each grid crosses two function dichotomies; a third falls out of them. Every grid carries a scale on which the leading function scores 4 and one partner function scores 4 alongside it.

The four-stroke cycle

Aušra compared information metabolism to the four strokes of an engine: intake, compression, combustion, exhaust. Jared's Control grid places the four strokes in its four cells. Churyumov quotes her cycle in Smile of the Cheshire Cat, with a working name for each function. The numbers are Aušra's own: cycle, then place in the cycle, so the role is 1/1 and the suggestive 1/2. In Theory of Intertype Relationships she adds that attention narrows and deepens along the way, from the role's breadth 8 and depth 1 to the creative's breadth 1 and depth 8.

Numbers are scores for functions 1 to 8. Bold names are Jared's.

Presence from two scales

Tencer's presence averages dimensionality and priority. Pick any two of the 42 scales to average them the same way.

Map of the seven dichotomies

Each dot is a function dichotomy. Each line, and the circle, is one of Jared's grids: the three dichotomies it holds together. The current grid is in red, with its single-point dichotomy in gold. Tap a line to open its grid.
